In 1968 the legacy of Shelton’s Primary Education Center (S.P.E.C.) began with Arthur and Regina Shelton providing child care services to a group of six students in their Berkeley home.
In 1971 their first newly renovated facility opened, which provided services for 21 children from 2-5 years of age.
In 1974 a second site one block away was purchased and was the beginning of the pre-kindergarten program. At this time the center was incorporated as a non-profit organization, and a new grade level was added each year until the 6th grade. The curriculum was exciting while providing a small nurturing environment for young children.
In 1976 a 9,000 square foot warehouse with land parcels on both sides (our current location) was purchased from BART. During this time classes were being held at the Finish Brotherhood Hall in Berkeley.
In 1979 S.P.E.C. opened its new renovated facility with enrollment of 110 students.
In 2006 Mrs. Lisa Hopkins, S.P.E.C. teacher of 10 years, was appointed as the new School-age Director.
In 2008 and 2009 major changes have taken place at S.P.E.C. The school-age program was taken over by two long time staff members, Mrs. Lisa Hopkins and Mrs. LaTarsha Singleton while Mrs. Robinson & Mrs. McGaffie prepared for retirement.
The programs have separated and have moved to new sites. The school-age program now called “Bridgemount Academy” has moved the classrooms to Mosswood Performing Arts Center in Oakland, CA. Shelton’s Preschool has returned to its original site on Bancroft Way in Berkeley where Ms. Cheryl Brooks, an 18 year employee, is the director.
